Quo fas vocat

I noticed the motto "Quo fas vocat" on a plaque at the Catholic Church on the island of Lindisfarne, which is also known as Holy Island. A not dissimilar motto is "Quo fas et gloria ducunt", which is that of the Royal Artillery. A simpler translation of "Quo fas vocat" than the one above is: "To where fate calls."

Crux Spes Unica

"Crux Spes Unica", which is the motto of the Catholic Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh, means: "The Cross our only hope."

There is a slightly longer form "Ave Crux Spes Unica", which is used as a pious expression as well as being a motto.  This translates as: "Hail the Cross our only hope."  There is a short article on Wikipedia about Ave_crux_spes_unica.

Habemus Papam

Whilst I am not a Roman Catholic, one thing I very much like about the Catholic Church is their continued use of Latin.  When the Cardinals succeeded in electing a new Pope on Thursday, the traditional Latin  announcement was made to the Faithful from the balcony of St Peter's Basilica: 

"Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum... habemus papam!" 

In English translation it is: "I announce to you a great joy... we have a pope!"  Containing just a verb in the first person plural present indicative active and a first declension noun in the accusative singular, the statement habemus papam is well within the understanding of a Latin beginner.
